26 Oct 2025

England's white-ball captain Harry Brook scored a stunning century to rescue his team from a disastrous start in the first ODI against New Zealand at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui.

The English top-order crumbled early on, leaving the team at a precarious 10/4.

However, Brook's explosive innings of 135 off just 101 balls helped England post a total of 223 runs in 35.2 overs.

The dasher went past 1,000 ODI runs during his stay.

Brook's aggressive approach
Game-changer

Brook's response to the early collapse was nothing short of aggressive.

He scored his first 36 runs entirely through boundaries.

His innings included nine fours and 11 sixes, which were instrumental in turning an impending disaster into a defendable total for England.

This was Brook's fourth century in the country, following three hundreds on Test tours.

A 1-man show
Milestone

Brook's 135 out of 223 runs constituted a whopping 60.53% of England's innings, highlighting the extraordinary nature of his performance.

The English captain reached his century in just 82 balls, hitting three sixes off Jacob Duffy.

He scored a total of 80 runs from England's last two wickets in an innings where only one other batter scored more than six runs.

Stats

As mentioned, Brook smashed nine fours and 11 sixes en route to his 135 off 101 balls.

This knock powered him past 1,000 ODI runs. He has now raced to 1,130 runs from 33 games at 37.66.

His strike rate is 103.86. This was his second ton and also his best score in the format (50s: 6).

This was his maiden 50-plus score across five innings against NZ.

Overton's crucial partnership with Brook
Partnership

Jamie Overton also contributed to England's recovery with his 46 off 54 balls in a seventh-wicket stand of 87.

The partnership helped England regain some momentum after Foulkes and Matt Henry had been effective during the early overs.

While Foulkes claimed a four-wicket haul, Jacob Duffy trapped three batters. A couple of wickets went to Henry.

Brook scripts these records
Records

As per ESPNcricinfo, Brook's 135 is the second-highest ODI score by an England skipper as a non-opener.

He is only behind Eoin Morgan's 148 vs Afghanistan in 2019. The southpaw had smashed 17 sixes during his stay.

Hence, Brook became only the second England skipper to hammer 10 or more sixes in an ODI.

Sri Lanka's Thisara Perera is the only visiting batter to hammer more sixes in an ODI innings in NZ than Brook (13 in Mount Maunganui, 2019)
