Mumbai Recently a bad news has come out from the entertainment world. Director Tsutomu Shibayama, who created children’s favorite cartoon series ‘Doraemon’, is no more. He has died at the age of 84. As soon as the news of Tsutomu’s demise came out, there was a wave of mourning among his fans and the industry.

‘Father of National Animation’


Tsutomu Shibayama died on March 6, 2026. The 84 year old director was fighting diseases for a long time. He had cancer in his lungs and after a long battle with this disease (Losing his Battle with Cancer), he said goodbye to the world. After a few days, Tsutomu Shibayama was about to celebrate his 85th birthday, but before that he passed away from this world. The studio said in its official statement, “Tsutomu Shibayama, animation director, managed the ‘Doraemon’ series for more than 20 years. His major contribution to the anime industry has also been appreciated. In Japan, he is often called the ‘Father of National Animation.’


Director Shibayama served as the TV anime lead director of Doraemon from 1984 to 2005. In his career he also directed two films, Doraemon: Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil (1983) and Nobita in the Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey. At the same time, many characters of his series became very famous among children.

Shibayama Tsutomu started his journey in animation in 1963 at Toei Animation. He then moved to A Production (now Shin-Ai Animation). Over the years, apart from ‘Doraemon’, he directed animation cartoon shows like ‘Chibi Maruko-chan’, ‘Lupin III’ and ‘Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Jorori’.

In 1978, Shibayama, along with Osamu Kobayashi and Michishiro Yamada, founded Ajiya-do Animation Works, further strengthening their hold on the industry. The studio confirmed that his funeral was held privately in accordance with the family’s wishes. A separate prayer vigil is expected to be held later.
