Perfect Crown, starring IU and Byeon Woo-Seok marked its conclusion amid high viewership and anticipation around what comes ahead in the story of its lead couple, Seong Hui-ju and Grand Prince I-an.

The MBC fantasy romance drama brought curtains down on its 12-episode run on Disney+ on May 16 with an emotional finale that featured political betrayal, royal upheaval and a heartfelt ending for its central couple. Infact the series ended as one of the biggest Korean dramas of 2026, after smashing streaming charts and online chatter globally. While audience got a hint of what was set to unfold, the final chapter of Prince Ian's coronation and the future of the show's monarchy found its peak.

Throughout its airing,  maintained thrill, excitement, palace intrigue and a sizzling chemistry between the two actors. And all of it only reached its crescendo in the last episode.

is set in a parallel contemporary Korea where the monarchy still exists, and follows chaebol heiress Seong Hui-ju and Grand Prince I-an as they navigate palace politics, public scrutiny and a slowly developing romance. What started as a relationship of royal duty eventually evolved into a strong emotional partnership built on sacrifice and trust.



Perfect Crown Episode 11 Recap

In Perfect Crown Episode 11, we saw Prince Ian getting trapped inside the Council Hall explosion. Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo had called him there, and later Huiju ran into the burning building to save him. With Choi-hyun's help, she rescues the unconscious Prince, who soon falls into a mild coma. Rumors of Ian's death spread throughout the country, and Huiju starts to suspect Jeong-woo when she finds out that he was the one who called Ian to the hall before the explosion. She refuses to be silenced, and starts her own investigation into the fire, even going so far as to confront Queen Mother Yi-rang directly, warning her to cooperate. Meanwhile, Jeong-woo plays palace politics without saying a word and even nudges Yi-rang to be regent while Ian is unconscious.

Shocking villain gets revealed

When Ian wakes up, palace tensions return. Finally Yi-rang admits her father Sung-won was involved in the attack and gives Ian the evidence implicating him while Jeong-woo keeps hiding key truths under the pretext of protecting the crown. As the palace conspiracy is slowly uncovered, Huiju grows increasingly sure that Jeong-woo is not to be trusted. Ian shocks Jeong-woo by declaring that he intends to abolish the monarchy entirely when he becomes the King. Shortly thereafter, he ascends to the throne in a grand royal ceremony.



Perfect Crown Episode 12, finale

The last episode opens with Ian officially taking the throne as the royal family simmers with unrest. But rather than accepting the mantle of royal power, he shocks the country by announcing his intention to abolish the monarchy outright. His decision immediately causes a rift in the palace, with ministers, royal loyalists and political elites opposing the move.

At the same time, Huiju gets caught up in yet another perilous political crisis. She finds evidence implicating Jeong-woo in a plot against Ian and has to face one of the prince's former closest confidants. The revelation is one of the most emotional turning points of the finale, particularly after Jeong-woo admits that resentment and ambition drove him towards betrayal.

The palace is left in turmoil, so Ian decides to leave it to the people to determine the future of the monarchy through a referendum across the country. Ultimately the result declares the end of the royal system, officially abolishing centuries of monarchy and relieving Ian of a burden he never really wanted.

Happy ending

With the political issue resolved, the finale fast-forwards three years, showing the characters living peaceful lives away from the restrictions of the palace. Huiju returns to Castle Group and focuses on rebuilding her career and strengthening her family ties. Finally, Ian is living a normal civilian life, free of the constant duties of the palace.



No more palace restrictions

The drama's final scenes depicted the happiness the couple had fought for throughout the series. Huiju and Ian are on the stadium kiss cam at a public sporting event they attended with their aides and now close friends, Choi Hyeon and Do Hye-jeong who have also become a couple. Huiju and Ian share a kiss as everyone cheers on. The adorable moment in a call-back to their previous sporting outing when they refuse to kiss due to "palace decorum." Now, they are free to live as a normal couple. The series ends on a warm, hopeful note, providing viewers with the happy ending many had been hoping for.
