In a gripping match at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, the West Indies achieved a hard-fought five-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in Bristol on Sunday. Hayley Matthews was once again the standout performer, taking her second consecutive three-wicket haul, which limited Sri Lanka to a mere 99 runs. The West Indies, despite facing challenges in their batting, successfully chased down the target, finishing at 99 for 5 in just 16.1 overs.

West Indies Strengthen Semi-Final Hopes

This win marks the West Indies' third straight victory in the tournament, significantly boosting their chances of reaching the semi-finals. They currently hold the second position in Group B, sharing points with England but trailing in net run rate.

Matthews Dominates with the Ball

Choosing to bowl first, Matthews led her team's bowling attack, claiming three wickets within her first two overs. She dismissed Vishmi Gunarathne in the opening over and followed up with crucial wickets of Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama. With Chinelle Henry contributing by taking the wicket of Imesha Dulani, Sri Lanka found themselves struggling at 23 for 4 by the end of the powerplay.

Silva's Efforts Fall Short

Nilakshika Silva, who had previously guided Sri Lanka to a win against New Zealand, attempted to stabilize the innings again. She formed a 34-run partnership with Kavisha Dilhari, ultimately scoring 30 runs off 26 balls. Kawya Kavindi added 17 runs, but the rest of the batting lineup faltered. The disciplined bowling from the West Indies ensured that Sri Lanka could not gain momentum, with Matthews finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 15 in her four overs, while Karishma Ramharack took 2 for 15.

West Indies Face Challenges in Chase

In their pursuit of the modest target, the West Indies encountered difficulties. After a promising start with a 28-run opening partnership, they lost Matthews to a run-out while attempting a risky single. Silva's direct hit from mid-on sent the West Indian captain back to the pavilion. Deandra Dottin fell victim to Nimasha Meepage on the last ball of the powerplay, leaving the West Indies at 36 for 2. The Sri Lankan bowlers maintained pressure, with Kavisha Dilhari proving particularly effective, finishing with figures of 2 for 22.

Taylor Seals the Win

Despite the pressure, Stafanie Taylor remained composed, scoring an unbeaten 27 runs. Her partnership of 29 runs with Jannillea Glasgow helped the West Indies secure the necessary runs with nearly four overs to spare.
