LA28 Olympic Rules for Cricket Qualification: Cricket is making a historic comeback in the Olympics after a long wait of 128 years. ICC for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 (LA28) and The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced its qualification rules for cricket. Cricket teams in Olympics 2028 will be selected on the basis of T20 format. A total of 6 teams each from both men’s and women’s categories will participate in this Olympics. Each team will include a maximum of 15 players, so let us know in this article the selection of teams for the Olympics. On what basis will the qualification be done?
As hosts of the 2028 Olympics, both the US men’s and women’s teams may get direct entries for the cricket event. However, a condition has been set for this that the USA team will have to be included in the top-15 in the ICC T20 rankings. A time limit has been set for this; If the USA team joins the top-15 teams in the ICC T20 rankings between June 30, 2026 and December 31, 2026, then it will qualify for the cricket event in the Olympics. But, if the USA team is not able to make its place in the top-15, then its place will be given to the next highest ranked team in the ranking.
In the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, 4 teams in the men’s category will be selected directly on the basis of continents through the ICC Men’s T20 Ranking. That means the top teams from four different continents will qualify for the Olympics. These 4 continents are Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania. The teams topping the ICC T20 rankings from this continent will directly make their place in the Olympics. The teams topping the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings from their respective continents from 30 June 2026 to the cut-off date of 31 December 2026 will directly secure their place in the Olympics.
If Team India wants to qualify for Olympics 2028, then it will have to remain the top team of Asia. Let us tell you that Team India is currently on top in the ICC T20 rankings.
However, the rules for direct qualification of the women’s cricket team are different from the men’s. Women’s cricket teams for the 2028 Olympics are being selected on the basis of performance in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 being played in England instead of ICC rankings. In such a situation, the best teams from the continents of Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania have qualified for the Olympics. India from Asia, Australia from Oceania, England (Great Britain) from Europe and South Africa from Africa have directly qualified for the Olympics. Team India has been the best team in Asia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
After the host country and continental selection, the sixth i.e. last team will be decided through a special tournament. A ‘Global Qualification Tournament’ will be organized for the last team, which will also be called ‘ICC Olympic Qualifier’. The teams which will not be able to qualify directly will get a chance to make their place in the Olympics through this tournament. The next 8 top-ranked teams in the ICC T20 rankings (31 December 2026 for men and 1 March 2027 for women) will be able to participate in this tournament. There will be no restriction of continent in this global qualifier tournament. The team that wins the tournament will become the sixth and last team to qualify for the Olympics.
The West Indies team definitely plays cricket and is recognized by the ICC, but West Indies is not a single country, rather it is a joint team made up of many small Caribbean countries. Now, since only a team from one country can participate in the Olympics, no team in the name of West Indies will be able to play in the Olympics. However, a special rule has been made for this. If the West Indies team remains among the top 8 teams in the world in the ICC T20 rankings by 31 December 2026, then a separate ‘West Indies Nations Regional Tournament’ will be organized among all these Caribbean countries. The country that wins this tournament (such as Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago etc.) will be selected to represent that region in the ‘Olympic Qualifier’ matches.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland participate in the Olympics not separately, but together as ‘Great Britain’. In such a situation, according to the Olympic qualification rules, only the T-20 ranking of the England team will be considered the main basis for the British Olympic quota. That is, since the England team will be the best in the ICC T20 rankings, a joint team from Great Britain will enter the Olympics.
The 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics will begin on July 14, 2028, and run through July 30. Along with this, the group stage and preliminary matches will start from July 12, two days before the opening ceremony. Actually, the matches are started before the opening ceremony because the number of matches in big team events like cricket, football and baseball in the Olympics is high and the athletes need rest between matches.
