Portugal will face Spain in the next round, while Croatia’s campaign ended after a match in which they had three goals ruled out for offside.

Croatia, who had frustrated Portugal for much of the first half, broke the deadlock eight minutes after the restart.

Nikola Vlasic switched play to the left, where veteran winger Ivan Perisic calmly slotted past goalkeeper Diogo Costa to give Croatia a 1-0 lead.

Portugal nearly responded immediately when Rafael Leao curled a shot onto the crossbar in the 58th minute. Two minutes later Ronaldo thought he had equalized, only for the goal to be ruled out by a tight offside call.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 66th minute after Renato Veiga was brought down inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, and Ronaldo confidently sent goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic the wrong way to level the score at 1-1.

Croatia continued to threaten despite the setback.

Mateo Kovacic rattled the post with a long-range strike in the 75th minute before forcing Costa into another save from the rebound. The 2018 finalists also had another effort ruled out for offside after Petar Sucic finished neatly following a through ball.

With extra time looming, Portugal found the decisive moment.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Leao delivered an early cross into the penalty area and substitute Goncalo Ramos rose above the Croatian defense to power a header into the net for a 2-1 lead.

Croatia believed they had forced extra time deep into stoppage time, but their celebrations were cut short when VAR ruled out the goal for offside, completing a frustrating night.

Portugal survived the late pressure to seal victory and advance to the last 16, while Croatia exited after a spirited performance that was repeatedly undone by marginal offside decisions.
