There were speculations that the former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin may replace Ajit Agarkar as BCCI selection committee chairman. As Agarkar's tenure is once again in the news, some fans feel that the experienced offie might take up the head job of the selection committee.

 

Consequently, under the existing BCCI regulations, such an appointment cannot be made at this point.

 

Ashwin retired from international cricket on 18 December 2024 on India's tour of Australia. Ashwin remains one of India's all-time greats as a cricketer and has also been praised for his cricketing knowledge; he has not yet been eligible to be chief selector.

 

Why Ashwin Cannot Become India's Chief Selector Now

 

The BCCI also has simple rules for the qualification of a chairman and members of the national selection committee. One of the conditions is that the candidate should have retired from all forms of the game for a period of at least five years.

 

Since Ashwin retired from international cricket in Dec 2024, he hasn't completed his required cooling-off period. Therefore, he is not eligible to apply for the chief selector position if a vacancy arises.

 

According to present rules, Ashwin will have served five years when he retires in December 2029, and only then can he be eligible for consideration. Until then, any reports connecting him to the role of Agarkar are mere conjecture.

 

Ashwin remains active in cricket by commentating, analysing, and discussing domestic cricket. However, these do not affect the criteria laid down by the BCCI for selectors.

Ajit Agarkar Continues to Lead India's Selection Panel

 

Ajit Agarkar has been on the cricket selectors' chair since July 2023 and still influences India's various teams across formats. Agarkar has been a selector when India began a significant transition with several of the senior players retiring.

 

Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane retiring has pushed the selectors to groom the next batch of players to don Indian colours in Test cricket.

 

However, Agarkar experienced success in the white-ball format. India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, 2025 Asia Cup and successfully defended their T20 World Cup to win again in 2026.

 

As the 2027 ODI World Cup is now the next big challenge for India, Agarkar and his panel will continue to focus on creating a balanced team.

 

Ashwin's Opportunity Will Come Later

 

Without a doubt, the cricket wisdom and experience of Ashwin could be effectively utilised in the future Indian cricket team. Even in terms of a selector or anything akin to a selector, he could be beneficial to the Indian cricket team in the subsequent years.

 

But for the time being, the BCCI rules do not permit this to happen. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin must wait for five years after his retirement before he can be eligible to become India's chief selector, even if the BCCI alters its eligibility criteria.
