The Indian boxer fought a tactical bout but went down 4-1 in a split decision, missing out on her maiden Commonwealth Games gold medal. The result marked Lovlina’s first CWG podium finish after previous disappointments at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.

The gold medal bout between Lovlina Borgohain and Emma-Sue Greentree remained tightly contested, with both boxers adopting a cautious approach and waiting for opportunities rather than engaging in continuous attacks.

In the final minute, Greentree increased the intensity and attempted to take control of the contest. Lovlina responded by avoiding several attacks and landing some accurate punches of her own.

Both fighters appeared confident after the final bell, raising their hands in anticipation of victory. However, after the judges’ decision, Australia’s Greentree was declared the winner through a 4-1 split verdict, leaving Lovlina with a silver medal.

The Glasgow campaign marked another important milestone in Lovlina Borgohain’s career as she finally opened her Commonwealth Games medal account.

The 28-year-old had faced setbacks in her earlier Commonwealth Games appearances. She exited in the quarterfinal stage at Gold Coast 2018 and suffered an opening-round defeat at Birmingham 2022.

This time, Lovlina received a direct entry into the semifinals before defeating Tuvalu’s Tarona Taafaki with a dominant 5-0 scoreline to secure a place in the final and guarantee herself a medal.

Lovlina has already established herself among India’s leading boxers. She created history by winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming only the third Indian boxer to achieve an Olympic podium finish.

A former world champion and Arjuna Award recipient, Lovlina also won gold at the Elite Women’s Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad in 2025. She is also serving as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) with the Assam Government.

Despite Lovlina’s silver medal finish, India’s boxing team has produced its strongest-ever Commonwealth Games performance.

India has secured five gold medals in boxing at CWG 2026 through Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas and Arundhati Choudhary.

Along with Lovlina, Jadumani Singh also added a silver medal to India’s boxing tally, further strengthening the country’s campaign in Glasgow.

Overall, India has now reached 35 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026, including 11 gold, 16 silver and eight bronze medals. The country currently stands fourth in the medal standings, while Australia continues to lead with 145 medals.
