To strengthen public transport in Delhi, the government has commissioned 200 new zero-emission electric buses. The Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister flagged off these buses at a ceremony held at the Delhi University Sports Complex.
With the addition of 200 new electric buses, Delhi’s electric bus fleet will grow to 4,938 . According to Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, the addition will bring the total number of buses in Delhi to approximately 6,800 . This will include approximately 4,938 electric and 1,750 CNG buses .
The new buses include 88 buses measuring 12 meters long and 112 buses measuring 9 meters long . For passenger convenience and safety, they will be equipped with features such as GPS tracking and CCTV cameras.
Inter-state electric bus services will also be launched between Delhi and Karnal. These buses aim to provide better public transport connectivity to key areas of Delhi.
These services will connect major areas like Nehru Place, AIIMS, South Extension, RK Puram, Connaught Place, ITO, Delhi Secretariat, Karol Bagh, Kashmiri Gate and Shivaji Stadium.
The new services include a total of 56 special electric bus trips , including 30 Ladies Special trips on 15 high-demand routes and 26 University Ladies Special trips on 13 routes.
Under the University Ladies Special service, major colleges like Hindu College, Ramjas College, Daulat Ram College, Shri Ram College of Commerce, LSR, Gargi College, ARSD, Hansraj College, SPM College, Deshbandhu College and SGGSCC will get connectivity.
The Delhi government has also established a public EV charging station at Rajghat Depot-1. Four EV chargers with a capacity of 240 kW each have been installed here. This will strengthen the charging infrastructure necessary for the operation of electric buses.
However, the exact routes, timings and fare details of these bus services will be clarified once the respective services commence.
