India is making waves in the world of chess. While stars like D Gukesh, R Praggnananda and Divya Deshmukh are continuously winning titles, young players are also doing wonders in the junior circuit. Indian players have become champions in both the Open and Girls categories of the Junior Asian Chess Championship 2026 held in Mumbai.

Mayak Chakraborty has won the title in the open category. Whereas Pratithi Bordoloi won the title of girls category. Mayank and Pratithi had scored 7-7 points out of a possible 8 before the final round. They secured their respective titles by playing a draw in the last round. Both were half a point ahead of the runners-up in their respective categories.

Mayank, who comes from Assam, has become a Grandmaster this year. He is the first player from North-East to achieve Grandmaster norm. Whereas 13 year old Pratithi is from Bengaluru. He had won the silver medal in the 2026 World Junior Chess Championship only last month.

All India Chess Federation (AICF) President Nitin Narang has congratulated these two young stars on their victory in the Junior Asian Chess Championship. He wrote on the social media platform 'X' that both of you should continue to win like this and increase the honor of India. This is our wish.

What was the condition of other Indian players?

In the Own category, Daksh Goyal, Ghadge Harsh, Refugee Veeresh, Vignesh Advait Vemula, Apoorva Kamble, Madhavendra Pratap Sharma scored 6.5-6.5 marks out of a possible 9. In the girls category, Prishita Gupta scored 6.5, while Dakshita Kumawat and Aadya Gowda scored 5.5-5.5.
