New Delhi. Protests took place again on Saturday in and around Delhi's Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Protestors belonging to student organisations, social activists and other groups raised questions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral voter list. The police detained many people citing that the demonstration was not permitted and prohibitory orders were in force.

Attempt to reach Jantar Mantar, stopped amid barricading

When the protesters tried to move towards Jantar Mantar, the police had put up barricades at many places. Some protesters were seen trying to cross the barricade, after which the police stopped them and detained them. According to officials, around 200 people were detained in Saturday's action.

AISA and civil society people also arrived

Apart from workers associated with All India Students Association (AISA), many people including social activist Yogendra Yadav and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan participated in the protest. The demands of the protesters included the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and accountability in matters to the electoral process and voter list.

Police had already increased security

Even before Saturday's protest, security was increased in Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas. People coming from Janpath, Ashok Road and Sansad Marg were being checked. Police had deployed additional forces and Rapid Action Force along with barricades.

Three FIRs after Friday's demonstration

A day before this, on Friday, there were demonstrations in many parts of Delhi. The protesters had tried to move towards Jantar Mantar even though the police had not given permission for the gathering there. Delhi Police registered three FIRs in connection with Friday's incidents. In these, other provisions including Section 223 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) have been imposed.

Face to face claims regarding SIR

The protesting groups allege that the changes in SIR and voter list have affected the rights of a large number of voters and the Election Commission should respond to this. On the other hand, the Election Commission views SIR as a process to correct the voter list. In such a situation, political controversy continues between the allegations being raised regarding the voter list and the position of the Commission.

Announcement to continue the protest further

Some organizations associated with the protest have talked about taking the movement forward. AajTak's report also mentions CJP's warning of another major agitation at Jantar Mantar from October 10. At present, Delhi Police has maintained tight security arrangements in sensitive areas of Jantar Mantar and Central Delhi.
