New Delhi. There is still time for the Indian Premier League i.e. IPL 2027 to start, but Delhi Capitals has already taken a big decision before that. The franchise has appointed veteran former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly as the new head coach of the team.

Delhi Capitals gave this information by sharing a video on social media platform X. In the post, the franchise wrote, “Delhi, it's time for bullying. Sourav Ganguly, Head Coach of Tigers.”

Got the responsibility in place of Hemang Badani

Till last season, the role of head coach of Delhi Capitals was being played by former Indian cricketer Hemang Badani. Now the franchise has handed over this responsibility to Sourav Ganguly.

Delhi Capitals is among those teams which have not been able to win the IPL trophy till now. In such a situation, Ganguly will have the challenge of making the team champion for the first time.

Before Ganguly, Delhi team has given the responsibility of head coach to Gregory Shippard, Eric Simons, Gary Kirsten, Paddy Upton, Ricky Ponting and Hemang Badani.

Ganguly has an old relationship with Delhi Capitals

Sourav Ganguly has a long association with Delhi Capitals. In March 2019, he was appointed advisor to Delhi Capitals. However, he had to part ways with the franchise after becoming the BCCI President in October 2019.

After completing his tenure in BCCI, Ganguly again joined Delhi Capitals and took the role of Director of Cricket. While holding this position, she handled behind-the-scenes operations and squad development in both the IPL and the Women's Premier League (WPL).

Apart from this, Ganguly also took over the responsibility of head coach of Delhi Capitals franchise Pretoria Capitals in SA20 2025. His team reached the final that season.

DC is continuously struggling in IPL

Delhi Capitals' IPL performance in the last few years has not been as per expectations. The team has not been able to progress beyond the group stage since IPL 2022. Delhi last made it to the playoffs in 2021.

At the same time, in 2020 the team reached the finals, but could not win the title. In such a situation, now Sourav Ganguly will have the responsibility of improving the performance of the team and taking it forward in the title race.
