Parthiv Patel has not applied for the post of BCCI chief selector. In such a situation, the chances of Pragyan Ojha continuing on this post have become stronger, while the names of Ramesh Powar and Sameer Dighe are also in discussion.
Pragyan Ojha likely to be the chief selector: The stir has intensified in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the post of chief selector of Team India. The post is vacant after the completion of the tenure of former chief selector Ajit Agarkar. BCCI had invited applications to fill this post, after which there was talk of former Indian wicketkeeper batsman Parthiv Patel applying. It was believed that Parthiv could submit his claim for this post, but he did not apply for it till the deadline of application was over.
Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha’s claim seems to be getting stronger due to Parthiv Patel not applying. After the end of Agarkar’s tenure, Ojha is holding the responsibility of chief selector in the interim. In such a situation, it is now expected that he will continue as the chairman of the selection committee for the remaining period of his tenure. However, the final decision on this post has to be taken by BCCI only.
Paving the way for Pragyan Ojha to become president
Ajit Agarkar’s tenure ended in early October 2026, after which BCCI had invited applications for the vacant post of West Zone representative in the selection committee. According to the report of news agency PTI, a board official said on the condition of confidentiality that no application was received from Parthiv Patel till 5 pm on October 14. The officer also clarified that the situation is not clear on whether the application deadline will be extended or not. If BCCI extends the deadline or Parthiv changes his decision, the equation may change. At present, the claim of Pragyan Ojha, representing the South region, is considered strong. Among the current selectors, his Test match experience is also being considered important in favor of his candidature.
Ramesh Powar may get a place in the senior selection committee
In case Parthiv Patel does not apply, the possibility of former Indian cricketer Ramesh Powar’s entry in the senior men’s selection committee is also under discussion. Powar is currently considered to be among the major contenders for the post of Chairman of the Junior Men’s Selection Committee. Apart from this, the name of former Indian wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe is also in discussion for the post of representative of West Zone.
Last time applications were invited for selector posts, both Powar and Dighe had applied. However, the number of contenders for this post from the western region is considered limited. Now all eyes will be on the next step of BCCI, because the equations of the selection committee may change due to extension of application deadline or emergence of new names.
