India’s bowling combination faces a fresh selection challenge ahead of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar returning to the national setup after impressive Indian Premier League campaigns. Captain Shreyas Iyer believes the experienced seamer’s presence will strengthen the attack while forcing other bowlers to maintain consistent performances to secure their places.
Speaking before the opening match in Christchurch, Iyer highlighted the value Bhuvneshwar brings to a group that has featured several new bowlers since the IPL. The 36-year-old’s comeback has attracted considerable attention, particularly after his performances in the 2025 and 2026 editions of the tournament. In the pre-match press conference Shreyas said,
Iyer described the selection dilemma created by Bhuvneshwar’s return as a positive development, arguing that competition should encourage players to deliver regularly rather than guarantee anyone a place in the playing eleven. Shreyas said,
The captain’s comments underline the importance of results as India prepare for the series. With several bowlers competing for limited opportunities, Bhuvneshwar’s experience could offer another option for the team management.
Bhuvneshwar’s recent record in franchise cricket provides further backing for his return. He has been part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s back-to-back IPL-winning campaigns, collecting 45 wickets across 30 matches.
His 2026 season was particularly productive, with 28 wickets in 16 appearances, making him one of the tournament’s leading performers. Iyer also pointed to the bowler’s recent success as evidence of his understanding of T20 cricket. He added,
Bhuvneshwar has taken 90 wickets in 88 T20 internationals, placing him seventh among India’s highest wicket-takers in the format. His return gives India an experienced option as they begin the New Zealand series.
