Diwali Free Gas Cylinder Scheme: Providing significant relief to the general public during the festive season amidst rising inflation, the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has decided to provide free gas cylinders to beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Under this initiative, approximately 1.86 crore families in Uttar Pradesh will receive a full subsidy for LPG cylinder refills twice a year—specifically during Diwali and Holi. For refills obtained between October and December 2026 (coinciding with Diwali), the subsidy for the LPG cylinder will be credited directly to the beneficiary's bank account.

In reality, due to soaring inflation and the rising cost of cooking gas, regularly refilling gas cylinders had become a challenge for many low-income families. Despite having gas connections, many beneficiaries were forced to continue relying on traditional stoves or firewood. To address this issue and enhance the joy of the festive season, the state cabinet has decided to provide two free cylinder refills annually to Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries. The first free refill will be provided between October and December 2026 (around Diwali), and the second between January and March 2027 (around Holi).

Eligibility for the Scheme

This benefit is exclusively for registered holders under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana; standard domestic gas connections do not fall under its scope. To avail of this scheme, it is mandatory for beneficiaries to complete Aadhaar authentication and the eKYC process for their gas connection. Furthermore, the consumer's bank account must be linked to their Aadhaar, with the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) facility enabled, ensuring that the subsidy amount is credited directly into their account. 

How to avail the benefit of a free LPG cylinder:

Between October and December 2026—coinciding with the Diwali period—you must book a cylinder through your respective gas agency (such as Indane, Bharat Gas, or HP Gas) following standard procedures and pay the full price at the time of delivery. Within a few days of the payment, the government will transfer the full subsidy amount directly into the consumer’s Aadhaar-linked bank account. If you have not yet completed your eKYC, please visit your nearest gas agency immediately or complete the biometric authentication process via the mobile app of your respective gas company.
