Joe Root continued his climb up the ladder of top Test run getters when he entered the 13,000-run club. He achieved the feat on the first day of the one-off Test between England and Zimbabwe. They are playing a four-day match. Root needed 28 when he walked out to bat and he fell for 34. But before he departed, he became the fifth player in the world and first from England to score 13,000 Test runs.
Root currently has 13,006 runs to his name in 153 Tests and 279 innings. Add to that an average of 50.8, 36 100s, 65 50s and a top score of 262. The man has the most runs among active Test players and is only 2916 away from going past Sachin Tendulkar’s world record tally of 15,921. He turns 35 this year so time is on his side.

But as he reached the 13,000 run-mark he did go past Sachin and Jacques Kallis to set a new record. It was to reach the milestone in the least number of Tests. Root took 153 games while Kallis held the previous record of 159. Sachin did it in 163.
Another record he is not too far away from is Sachin’s tally of 68 Test 50s. Four more shall take Root past the legend. Since his Test debut in 2012 vs India, Root has evolved as a batter and gone from strength to strength. His conversion rate is amazing. The fact that he has six scores over 200 is proof of that.

If Root scores another 373 runs he shall leapfrog Rahul Dravid, Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become second on the overall list.
Root shall be a major threat when India tour England. The series begins on June 20 and the visitors shall be without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who have called time in the oldest format. Root’s wicket shall have a price attached to it because if he gets a big score, England more often than not come out on top.
