Mumbai: In Hinduism, Lord Shani is worshipped as the deity of justice and karma. While many people associate his name with fear, scriptures and belief systems clarify that Shani Dev simply delivers results based on an individual’s deeds. If one’s karma is good, Lord Shani elevates that person’s life. However, if one engages in wrongdoing, Shani is also the strict disciplinarian who administers punishment. His gaze is therefore considered both powerful and decisive in determining the course of a person’s life.

For individuals undergoing Saturn’s Sade Sati or Dhaiyya periods as per Vedic astrology, Shani Jayanti holds immense spiritual and astrological significance. This is one of the most auspicious days to seek Lord Shani’s blessings and alleviate the hardships linked to Saturn’s influence.

Mythological texts state that Shani Dev appeared on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Jyeshtha month, which is why this day is considered especially sacred. Observing fasts, offering donations, and chanting Shani mantras on Shani Jayanti can bring divine protection and relief from ongoing struggles.

When is Shani Jayanti 2025?

According to the Hindu Panchang (calendar), the Amavasya tithi of the Jyeshtha month begins at 12:11 PM on 26 May 2025 and ends at 8:31 PM on 27 May 2025. Therefore, as per the sunrise-based Udaya Tithi system, Shani Jayanti will be observed on Tuesday, 27 May 2025. This day is regarded as highly auspicious for worshipping Lord Shani and seeking his divine grace.

What Not to Do on Shani Jayanti

1. Avoid Cutting Hair and Nails

As per traditional belief, cutting hair or nails on Shani Jayanti is inauspicious and spiritually impure. Even though there is no scientific basis for this, following this age-old custom is believed to bring positive spiritual results.

2. Be Cautious While Donating Oil

Offering oil to Lord Shani and donating it to the needy is considered highly beneficial on this day. However, one must ensure that the oil is fresh and unused. Never donate stale, leftover, or used oil as it is seen as disrespectful and can diminish the positive effects of the offering.

3. Do Not Insult Anyone

Lord Shani is the upholder of justice and does not tolerate mistreatment of the poor or weak.

Avoid insulting or harming anyone, especially those who are underprivileged. Showing arrogance or cruelty can invoke Saturn’s wrath and may lead to increased hardships.

4. Refrain from Tamasik Food

Eating sattvic (pure vegetarian) food is considered best on Shani Jayanti. One should strictly avoid tamasik items such as meat, alcohol, onions, and garlic. Opt for clean, light, and vegetarian meals to maintain both physical and mental purity.

5. Keep Anger in Check

One of the key teachings of Lord Shani is discipline and emotional restraint. On this day, try to remain calm and avoid anger, jealousy, or irritability. Negative emotions may invite further challenges. Practice meditation, silence, and positive thinking to align with Shani’s energy.

By observing the right rituals and avoiding these spiritual don’ts, devotees can strengthen their connection with Shani Dev and invite protection, prosperity, and peace into their lives.
