Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford has shown his support for former team-mate David de Gea after the goalkeeper penned a new deal with Serie A side Fiorentina. De Gea found himself without a club in the 2023/24 season following his release by United manager Erik ten Hag, who was keen to bring in a keeper more suited to playing out from the back.
Despite being clubless, the Spanish international maintained his fitness levels and trained at National League side Altrincham as he awaited a fresh opportunity, which came last summer when Fiorentina took a punt on the experienced shot-stopper for the 2024/25 season. The 34-year-old has since made an impressive 42 appearances for the Italian outfit, securing 11 clean sheets and contributing to their journey to the Conference League semi-finals, although they lost to Real Betis.
With Fiorentina securing a sixth-place finish in Serie A and a spot in next season's Conference League qualifiers, De Gea's future at the club is now set, having signed a three-year extension this week.
The news of De Gea's contract renewal was warmly received by his old colleagues, with United skipper Bruno Fernandes commenting: "Number one," and Rashford expressing his congratulations with a love heart emoji.
In contrast to De Gea, Rashford's future at Old Trafford is shrouded in uncertainty. The winger was loaned out to Aston Villa for the latter half of the previous season and it is understood that he does not have a future with United.
Aston Villa do possess a £40m option to purchase Rashford this summer, however, they do not hold first refusal rights. Barcelona have expressed their interest in Rashford, but it remains to be seen if they can submit an offer that meets United's approval.
