In the final of IPL 2025, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) created history by defeating Punjab Kings by 6 runs. On June 3, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, RCB finally fulfilled the dream that was waiting since 2008. On this victory, former team owner Vijay Mallya also expressed his happiness and made a big disclosure.
“RCB bought at Lalit Modi’s behest” – Vijay Mallya revealed
In a podcast interview, Vijay Mallya said that when the teams were bidding at the beginning of the IPL, Lalit Modi advised him to buy a team. Mallya said, “Lalit Modi came to me and said that buy a team. Impressed by his words, I decided to buy RCB.”
He further stated that he bought Royal Challengers Bangalore for $ 111.6 million (about Rs 476 crore).
Story behind RCB
Vijay Mallya was the owner of United Spirits Limited (USL) at that time. Hence the team was named after a USL’s popular liquor brand ‘Royal Challenge’. However, after legal disputes in 2016, Mallya dropped out of the USL and the entire control of RCB went to Diazio.
Even after 2016, Mallya had no relation with the team, but when RCB won the title for the first time in IPL 2025, he definitely congratulated the victory.
Vijay Mallya congratulates the team emotional
Vijay Mallya wrote on X (first Twitter),
“When I bought RCB, my dream was that the IPL Trophy came to Bengaluru.
He further wrote,
“Veterans like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers also became part of RCB and brought the team to new heights. Finally, the trophy reached Bangalore. RCB fans are entitled to its real.”
